We don’t know exactly who first thought of distressing rather than discarding Vintage Turkish and Persian carpets by “colour reforming” or overdying, but we do know he was Turkish and we think he was a genius! Contemporary home decorating trends show a move away from the strong, often dark, colours typical of most Oriental carpets, yet the beauty of the designs still appeals. On our travels throughout Turkey seeking treasures from the past, suitable quality Vintage carpets are carefully selected as only high quality, 100% wool, hand knotted carpets will successfully survive the overdying process and live well into the future. The pile is sheared, original colours are “bleached”, faded or removed and, after fastidious washing, the carpet is then re-dyed in a single-colour dye bath. The result is a piece which exhibits many different shades and hues of the main colour through which the original traditional and intricate design elements gently peek from their nomadic past to their bright, new future. Overdye? Overjoy!
